The Redcliffe Peninsula is one of the best launch pads in Moreton Bay. From here you can reach sand islands, calm bay beaches, Brisbane and the hinterland, all within easy reach for a day out.
Why is Redcliffe a great base for day trips?
Redcliffe sits on a peninsula in Moreton Bay, with the open water to the east and Brisbane to the south. That central position means you are rarely far from a beach, a boat ramp or a scenic drive.
Our villa is about 5 minutes from Redcliffe Beach and Newport Marina, and roughly 40 minutes from central Brisbane, so you can head out early and be back for a relaxed evening.
How do you get to Moreton Island for the day?
Moreton Island is a vast sand island known for its clear water, big beaches and the Tangalooma wrecks, a cluster of sunken hulls that make a popular spot for snorkelling.
Access is by ferry from the bay or by 4WD, depending on how you want to explore. A few things to keep in mind:
- Much of the island is soft sand, so a 4WD and the right permits are needed to drive there.
- The wrecks are a sheltered, scenic place to snorkel in calm conditions.
- Take water, sun protection and supplies, as facilities are limited.
Is Bribie Island good for an easy day out?
Bribie Island is one of the most relaxed day trips from Redcliffe because you can simply drive on over the bridge, no ferry required.
The bay side offers calm, shallow beaches that suit families, while the passage and surrounding waters are popular for fishing. It is an easy choice when you want sand and water without a long journey.
What about North Stradbroke Island and Brisbane?
North Stradbroke Island, often called Straddie, sits further afield to the south and rewards the longer trip with surf beaches, walking tracks and wildlife. It makes a fuller day out, so plan an early start.
Central Brisbane is about 40 minutes by car, or you can take the train from Kippa-Ring station and skip the city parking. The riverside precincts, galleries and dining make it an easy change of pace from the coast.
Can you reach the hinterland and Sunshine Coast?
Head north and the scenery shifts quickly. The Glass House Mountains rise dramatically from the plains, with lookouts and walking trails for all levels.
Beyond them, the Sunshine Coast hinterland offers cooler green hills, small villages and country drives, a lovely contrast to a day on the bay.
